Connected Beyond Coverage: Search and Rescue Communications

Supporting SAR Communications in the North Sea

Search and rescue operations demand reliable communication in environments where traditional coverage cannot always reach. For Bristow Group’s SAR crews operating in the North Sea, missions can involve long distances, challenging weather, and offshore locations where staying connected is critical.

A new video featuring Bristow Group provides a firsthand look at these challenges and how advances in aviation connectivity are helping SAR teams communicate beyond traditional radio coverage.

Featuring Trond Bjerkum, SAR Commander at Bristow Group; Jarand Palaniappan, Team Leader SAR at Bristow Group; and Giles Peeters, Director of Business Development at Guardian Mobility, the video explores what reliable connectivity can mean when conditions change quickly and information needs to move between the aircraft and teams on the ground.

Extending Connectivity Beyond Traditional Coverage

The integrated solution extends connectivity aboard the aircraft using Iridium satellite communications, enabling crews to communicate beyond the reach of traditional terrestrial networks and use familiar communication tools in flight.

For SAR operations, that connectivity can support more than voice communication. Crews can exchange real-time information with teams on the ground, including updates that can help medical personnel prepare for a patient before the aircraft arrives.

The result is a more connected operation, with aircraft, ground teams, and supporting organizations able to share critical information when it matters most.

Connected SAR in Action

The video highlights how technology and expertise from Iridium, Guardian Mobility, Flightcell, and Vipe 21 come together to support Bristow Group’s SAR operations in the North Sea.

For Guardian Mobility, it is also a strong example of the value of an end-to-end approach to aviation communications: extending connectivity beyond traditional coverage and helping make critical information accessible across the mission.
